June 2017

June 2017
June officially kicked off our summer with Allison getting out of school and both girls staying home with one of our favorite baby sitters every day for the summer.   The girls are enjoying summer and really not missing school, so I’m sure they will be in for a surprise in August!
As we mentioned, we asked our neighbor, Margaret, to watch the girls while we are working this summer.  She has taken them multiple times to the pool, different parks, and the library.  We signed the girls up for tennis lessons with the Sniadecki’s at North Central, so they have been enjoying that new activity this summer.  Margaret also takes them over to her house to play.  On top of that, there are many times that we come home to a driveway full of chalk or a game of tag going on in our backyard with other neighbor children.  It has been everything we hoped for and it has allowed for Deb and I to not deal with dropping off or picking up the girls from school, saving us lots of time.
My last day at Hurco was June 9th and it was definitely surreal.   When you have worked somewhere for 12 years, there is quite a comfort level you have with your work, but also the people at work.  Anyone that knows me realizes that I value my work relationships tremendously and really enjoy “liking” where I work, not only the work I do.  I enjoyed some happy hours at a local bar over my last 2 weeks and enjoyed telling stories and having some beers with everyone.  My first month at Herff Jones has been exactly what I was expected.   It has been challenging as there are several things to work on and I’m trying to learn things as quickly as I can.  I participated in the annual finance conference which was a great way to learn about the company and the direction of the finance team.  This new job reminded me of when we brought Allison home, Deb and I were worried and concerned about several things as new parents.  3 months later, we weren’t worried about those things as they weren’t a big deal anymore, we had new concerns!  I think a new job is like that, everything just needs to be absorbed and learned in a timely manner, and things will work out.
Early in the month, Allison graduated from Kindergarten and it was a really cool ceremony.  Mom, Randy and Anna were able to attend and we enjoyed a picnic with her classmates afterwards.  There was a school-wide ice cream party at Broad Ripple Park after the picnic, so we went to that and then we all went to the pool to celebrate.
For the 3rd year in a row, we went to visit the Rago family.  We drove to their new house in Chicago on Thursday and enjoyed some pizza.  The following morning, we went up to Lake Geneva and didn’t leave their house after that.  We enjoyed some good weather and as the kids have gotten older and play together, it has become a lot easier to enjoy ourselves around the pool.  One of our fraternity brothers, Scott Puzen, came by with his family and it was great to catch up with him.  The drive home on Father’s day was difficult as 3 late nights for the girls without any naps caused the girls to start falling apart by dinner time.
Our annual “Cousins Weekend” at my mom’s condo was near the end of June and it was a great time.  We hung out there Friday afternoon and all day on Saturday.  The girls played very well with their cousins and enjoyed swimming along with playing with them.   Several of us went to the Christ the King Summer Social on Friday evening.  The girls had a good time with some of the kids from school, their cousins and the Sniadecki’s.

Sarah’s Things of the Month
Sarah has started napping only a few times a week which has been nice so we can do multiple things in a day and not have to get home to put her down for a nap.  After about 3 or 4 days without a nap, we can tell it is time to get her to bed for an hour or so in the afternoon.  Sarah is really enjoying her tennis lessons.

Allison’s Thing of the Month
Allison enjoyed her baseball season as it came to an end in June.  She really did well with learning to throw and she has a pretty good arm.  Too bad she can’t see very well, because her aim isn’t the best!

A few more items from this month:
  • Debbie took the girls to get an overdue haircut.  They got several inches taken off and look much older!
  • We went to an Indians game with the Sniadeckis.  It was fun, so of course it was time for ice cream!
  • We had a pine tree removed in our front yard and are trying to grow grass in the heat of summer.
  • We went over to the Bassett’s for a cookout to celebrate Tom’s 40th birthday!
  • We had our annual pictures taken by Sarah Souders.  We had them taken on the Monon in Carmel.
  • Deb and I went on a date night to Ocean Prime.  It was long overdue as we used several gift cards.
  • I went over to Naab’s house and had some beers with him and Gareth.  It was good to catch up as it had been too long since we had seen each other.
