We have continued to do our best to survive during this time of social distancing. As with most people, everything just goes a little better when it is warmer outside. The kids can get outside and burn off some energy and we can all get out of the house.
The biggest news of the month was that I found a new job and started on April 27th. The list of people to thank during this difficult and unexpected transition is too long to type out, but I was overwhelmed by the amount of support I was given by friends, family and my professional network to be able to find a job in less than a month. I’m the controller for Kauffman Engineering and am looking forward to my new role. Interviewing over Zoom and being on the phone for 2-4 hours a day discussing my situation and options with so many people was challenging for the girls and Debbie. The best part of all of this was that the girls were super pumped I found a job so that I wouldn’t be their nanny this summer! They told me I wouldn’t be as much fun as a nanny and would say no too much.
An unexpected blessing during this challenging time is the opportunity to spend getting to know some neighbors. Every once in a while, a group of dads would gather and enjoy a few beers after the kids are in bed. There were several of these guys which I thought I knew but have enjoyed getting to know them even better. And, to be honest, it is just fun to feel a little normal and have some beers with some guys.
Another positive during this time that I didn’t expect was that I was able to see my sister Beth about 2 times a week for 6 weeks until I went back to work. We would meet up during her daughter’s nap time or after all the kids are in bed. We enjoyed sitting 6 feet apart and sharing some beers or bourbon. She was a good person to bounce a few things off while I was figuring out what my next career move would be.
Our birthday present to the girls was a basketball goal. We talked with neighbors and our HOA and it was approved to put the hoop in our yard but facing the cul-de-sac. The girls were so excited to play on it and most neighbors that have had positive things to say. We are looking forward to having some neighborhood games for the kids and the adults for years to come.
Sarah’s Things of the Month
Sarah enjoyed a fantastic 7th birthday. She woke up to doughnuts delivered from one of her friends. She enjoyed a dance party in the front yard with several neighbors and friends thanks to Kent Campbell. She received videos wishing her a happy birthday from several of her friends. She enjoyed her birthday gifts and cake from Taylor’s bakery.
Allison’s Thing of the Month
Allison turned 9 this month. She enjoyed a Zoom call with her class which was dedicated to her and played some games. She also received several videos from her friends, enjoyed her birthday gifts and an ice-cream cake from Dairy Queen.
A few more items from this month:
- We have aired up the tires to mom’s bike which I’ve been told is possibly 25 years old and gone on some family bike rides. We have ventured out to other neighborhoods nearby and seen family and friends.
- The girls have enjoyed biking so much, they like to go along while I go for a run. They don’t remember that I’m running and they are biking. First off, my pace has to be faster since I’m chasing them on bikes and they are singing or asking questions the entire time. I shouldn’t complain because time with them does fly by, but those runs are pretty difficult.
- The girls have really enjoyed spending time with their 4 favorite babysitters & nannies who are all home from college or high school across the street. They have shot hoops, flew kites, played cornhole and ladder-ball with them.
- I went up to Jeremy’s for a quick haircut and a few beers early in April so I could prep for my Zoom interviews. He did a great job and I’m going to head up there again soon.
- Easter was quiet this year. The bunny hid eggs & baskets in the basement we enjoyed our virtual mass with our Christ the King parish.
